Perfecting Loneliness

Edward is a shy, yet engaging young man who has created a vivid woodland for himself; a place that provides safety and security from the harsh realities of modern urban living. His detached existence leads him to be viewed as a stranger to society, forcing him to retreat deeper into his own world.
Upon leaving his haven, he encounters Konstantine, a confident young woman whose apparent ability to cope in the modern world causes Edward to fall in love with her and try to reach beyond the boundaries of his existence. But when things start to fall apart, Edward must choose between facing life head on, or immersing himself completely in his world.

The creation of Perfecting Loneliness was primarily an exercise in showcasing the style and vision of writer/director Paul Furlong. Following the Tarantino school of thought that, “The only way to make it as a director is to write a script, good or bad, and to provide that script with an interesting and unique visual interpretation.” Paul used a script written whilst attending university. In developing the draft to create a work that fulfilled his original inspiration, Paul added in subtle pastiches of some of his favourite films, using the works of such visionaries as Tim Burton to establish particular shots, such as the opening walking shot, and to find an affecting musical tone as in such films as Garden State and Gerry. Perfecting Loneliness began pre-production in April 2006. By May, the cast and crew were finalised and filming dates were set for the end of July. Production lasted six days, following two days of rehearsals and post-production was completed during the end of 2006. The production involved a core team of four people, plus seven principal cast and twenty-three extras, together with a catering team to feed everybody – all of whom donated their time and talents to make this adventure a reality. The film was funded entirely by the cast and crew.
